Trying to decide between a mesh office chair and an upholstered one? The answer isn't as simple as “mesh is more breathable” or “upholstery is more comfortable.”
Both can be excellent choices for everyday office use. The right option depends on how you work, whether you tend to get warm while sitting, the type of comfort you prefer, where the chair will be used and, of course, your budget.
There is also a third option that is often overlooked: a mesh backrest combined with an upholstered seat. In fact, this is one of the configurations we sell most often at Solutions M3.
So rather than simply comparing mesh and upholstery, it helps to look at the backrest, seat and ergonomic features separately.
Mesh or upholstered: which office chair is better?
There is no universal winner.
A mesh-back office chair allows more air to circulate around your back. This makes it particularly appealing if you tend to get warm while working or prefer a lighter, more contemporary look.
An upholstered office chair provides a different sitting experience. In our showroom, we often find that customers perceive upholstered chairs as providing more support. They also tend to have the more conventional appearance many people associate with an office chair.
But choosing based on these differences alone can be misleading.
The material does not determine comfort or ergonomics by itself. A mesh chair isn't automatically ergonomic, and an upholstered chair isn't necessarily more comfortable. The design of the backrest and seat, the mechanism, the chair's dimensions and its adjustment options can matter much more.

Why choose a mesh-back office chair?
The main advantage of mesh is straightforward: breathability.
Unlike a fully upholstered backrest, tensioned mesh allows air to circulate. If you tend to get warm while working or work in a warmer environment, that difference can become an important factor in your decision.
It's one of the things we ask about when helping customers choose a chair at Solutions M3.
A lighter, more contemporary design
There are exceptions, of course, but many commercial office chairs with mesh backs have a lighter, more modern appearance.
Visually, the backrest can feel less substantial than a fully upholstered one. This can work particularly well in contemporary workplaces or when the chair's appearance is an important part of the decision.
There is an important distinction, however: modern design does not automatically mean advanced ergonomics.
Many streamlined mesh-back chairs on the market use relatively simple synchronized mechanisms and provide fewer adjustments than more specialized ergonomic chairs.
That's why the chair needs to be evaluated as a whole.
Mesh quality makes a real difference
Not all mesh is created equal.
The material needs to maintain enough tension to properly support the user. Over the years, we've seen some lower-quality residential chairs from other manufacturers lose tension in their mesh.
We haven't experienced this issue with the commercial models we sell, but the observation is still important: you shouldn't judge the durability of a chair simply because it has a mesh back.
The quality of the materials and construction matters.
Why choose an upholstered office chair?
An upholstered chair can be an excellent choice for everyday office use.
It provides a different feel from tensioned mesh. When customers try different chairs in our showroom, many perceive upholstery as providing a greater sense of support.
That doesn't mean an upholstered chair is automatically more ergonomic. Support depends on the chair's overall design.
A more traditional comfort experience
For someone accustomed to conventional office chairs, an upholstered seat and backrest provide a familiar feel.
Foam creates a different contact surface than tensioned mesh. Depending on the density and shape of the cushioning, the feel can vary significantly from one chair to another.
That's why you shouldn't simply choose the chair that feels the softest during the first few minutes. If you're going to work in it for several hours at a time, proper support and fit matter more.
More design possibilities
Upholstery can also provide significantly more design flexibility.
Depending on the manufacturer and chair model, you may be able to choose from different colours, textures and fabric grades. This makes it easier to coordinate seating with the overall design of an office.
That can be particularly valuable for businesses looking to match their furniture to their brand identity or the materials and finishes used throughout their workspace.
Mesh back and upholstered seat: a very popular combination
Choosing a mesh office chair doesn't necessarily mean sitting on mesh.
That's an important distinction.
One very common configuration combines a breathable mesh backrest with an upholstered seat.
At Solutions M3, we sell many chairs in this configuration. They are considerably more popular with our customers than full-mesh models.
Why?
Because they combine two desirable characteristics: airflow around the back and the familiar feel of a cushioned seat.
The YouToo office chair and tCentric Hybrid are good examples of this approach.
At the other end of the spectrum, some chairs use upholstery for both the backrest and seat, while full-mesh models extend the mesh construction to the seat itself.

Mesh doesn't automatically mean ergonomic
This is probably the most important misconception to avoid.
A chair can have a beautiful mesh back, excellent airflow and a contemporary design without necessarily providing all the adjustments you need.
Conversely, a fully upholstered chair can offer a very high level of ergonomic adjustability.
When choosing an ergonomic office chair, you therefore need to look beyond the upholstery.
Consider the chair's mechanism, height adjustment, armrest adjustments, back support and, especially, whether the chair's dimensions are appropriate for your body. Seat depth and width, for example, can make a significant difference in whether a chair actually fits the person using it.
You may prefer the breathability of a mesh back but ultimately be better served by another chair if it is a better match for your body and the way you work.
Which chair should you choose for your situation?
Instead of immediately asking “mesh or upholstered?”, we prefer to start by understanding how the chair will actually be used.
You tend to get warm while working
A mesh back is definitely worth considering.
Its ability to allow air to circulate is its main advantage. If you're sensitive to heat, this can become an important factor in your decision.
A hybrid configuration with a mesh back and upholstered seat can also provide a more traditional sitting surface while maintaining airflow around your back.
You prefer a cushioned feel
A chair with an upholstered seat and backrest is probably a better place to start.
You'll still want to compare different models, since seat firmness, depth and shape, as well as backrest design, can significantly change how one chair feels compared with another.
Design is an important consideration
Don't automatically assume that an upholstered chair will look better.
Many commercial mesh-back office chairs have a particularly refined, contemporary appearance.
Where the chair will be used also matters. A chair for a bedroom or a home office located in a living room may need to blend into the surrounding décor differently than one used at a commercial workstation.
You work eight hours a day
In this situation, we wouldn't choose a chair based solely on its upholstery.
For everyday professional use, construction quality, mechanism, adjustments, dimensions and fit become essential.
The standard commercial office chairs offered by Solutions M3 are selected for professional workplace use. When the application becomes significantly more demanding — a 24/7 environment, for example — we look instead for configurations with materials and mechanisms designed for more intensive use.
The way the chair will be used ultimately matters more than simply asking “mesh or fabric?”
5 questions to ask yourself before choosing
This is essentially the approach we use when helping someone select an office chair.
1. How will you use the chair?
Occasional use for a few hours and a full workday don't necessarily require the same priorities.
2. Where will the chair be used?
A commercial office, private office, bedroom, living room or dedicated home office can each introduce different functional and aesthetic considerations.
3. Do you tend to get warm while working?
If so, a mesh back becomes particularly appealing.
4. What matters most to you: comfort, adjustability or design?
These aren't mutually exclusive, but understanding your priorities makes it easier to compare the right chairs.
5. What is your budget?
Your budget helps determine which types of construction, mechanisms and levels of adjustability are realistic options.
You'll notice we intentionally didn't ask, “Do you prefer mesh or fabric?”
Why? Because if you've never compared several well-designed office chairs, you may not know the answer yet.
Trying a chair helps, but it isn't always possible
Two people of a similar size can have completely different preferences.
One may immediately appreciate the tension of a mesh back. Another may prefer the feel of an upholstered backrest. A third may end up choosing a hybrid chair after trying both.
Whenever possible, trying several configurations can help you better understand your preferences. At our Quebec City showroom, you can compare different models and experience the differences between mesh, upholstery, mechanisms and adjustments firsthand.
Can't visit our showroom to try a chair?
That's not a problem.
Over the years, we've developed the expertise and tools needed to advise customers remotely and assess with a high degree of confidence whether a chair is likely to be a good fit.
Instead of simply recommending a popular model, we look at your body dimensions, how you work, how many hours you'll use the chair, your comfort preferences, your work environment and your budget. We can then compare that information with the dimensions, adjustments and characteristics of different chair models.
This process also allows us to tell you when a chair you're considering probably isn't the best choice for you and recommend a more appropriate alternative.

So, should you choose a mesh or upholstered office chair?
If you tend to get warm or prefer a lighter, more contemporary design, a mesh back is an excellent place to start.
If you prefer the feel of a cushioned backrest or a more traditional appearance, an upholstered chair may be a better fit.
But there is a third option that's well worth considering: a mesh back combined with an upholstered seat. It's also one of the most popular configurations among our customers.
Most importantly, don't let the material make the decision for you.
A good office chair should first and foremost suit your body, the way you work, your environment and your comfort preferences.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mesh office chair more ergonomic than an upholstered chair?
No. Mesh is a material, not an ergonomic feature. A mesh chair can offer many adjustments or very few, just like an upholstered chair. You need to consider the overall design, including the mechanism, backrest, seat, armrests, dimensions and adjustment options.
Is a mesh office chair better if I tend to get hot?
A mesh back can be particularly beneficial because it allows air to circulate behind your back. If you tend to get warm while sitting, this is one of the main advantages of choosing mesh.
Is a full-mesh office chair better than a hybrid chair?
Not necessarily. A hybrid chair typically combines a mesh back with an upholstered seat. This gives you airflow around your back while maintaining the familiar feel of a cushioned seat. It's also a very popular configuration among Solutions M3 customers.
Does office chair mesh stretch or sag over time?
Mesh quality and construction make a significant difference. At Solutions M3, we've seen some lower-quality residential chairs from other manufacturers lose mesh tension over time, but we haven't experienced this issue with the commercial models we sell. It's therefore important not to assume that all mesh chairs will perform the same way.
